Junk Yard Bear, 2004

A ferocious creature menaces the intersection outside Mount Baker Senior Secondary.

The brainchild of former art teacher John McKinnon, the bear was the final art project of the 2004 graduating art class. Grizzlies are the school mascot, so McKinnon and his students went to the local junkyard and grabbed an assortment of leaf springs, coil springs, U-joint knuckles, and crankshafts. Using those and other scraps of metal, the young artists sawed and torched the life-sized bear into being. Longtime artist McKinnon now lives in Nelson, BC, where he has created a multi-artist sculpture garden; his work can be found across Canada.
