Lesha Koop Mild Steel

For this compact but bold artwork, Vancouver artist Lesha Koop looked for a pattern that recurs many places in the natural world. She spent much of her childhood exploring the forests of British Columbia, and grew up with a keen love of nature. "Using a geometrical base for my sculpture, I’ve created a form that could suggest a comet, a seed head, a puffer fish or a virus," says Koop.

The trained steel fabricator and welder used mild steel to create her prickly piece. She sculpts in a variety of mediums, particularly metals, but experiments with blacksmithing, metal casting, photography, print making and textile weaving.

Koop balances her practice of making and exhibiting art with her work as a museum mount maker.
